Now that from what I've read it seems like they plan on adapting the entire light novel series (just to specify, I haven't read it... I just prefer complete adaptations or original stories... anything that has a definitive conclusion. I don't exactly trust MAL ratings when you get multiple seasons in, since by that point, you generally only have people left rating it that have liked the series from the beginning. Is it worth starting at this point? Does anyone have a good comparison for what the show is similar to? Does it learn more to the sci-fi, comedy, or just plain harem side?

Thanks to anyone that answers!
Cheers!

Not fully about the story but every season except 4 and 5 has different art style because the first two studios have folded and jc staff is now doing something else so the show has so inconsistency.

sci fi = not exactly

comedy = might not be your type

plain harem = more like just multiple girls lite romance

series is more of romance, tragedy, mystery, drama and action now and then.

Season 1 and 2: Watch blu ray version only. Ep 6 of season 1 and Ep 1 of season 2 are filler episodes, and bad at that. Otherwise seasons are more or less fine as adaptations of Vol 1-7 of the light novel.

Movie: If you like the show, should enjoy this. Ending of movie is more like what the real series is.

Season 3: Slightly dull looking, but covers the best arc yet. However, cut stuff damage the lore and characterization. Last episode adapts an entire book!

Season 4: Artstyle change. Rushed arcs except the last one. Should enjoy this season the most if you are into the story and noticed the foreshadowings in earlier seasons.

Season 5: DAL made it to here! Obviously many things haven't been set up as nicely as the LN, but it is covering the best arcs of the series. When I say best arcs, I mean arcs that can make a series a 8/10 from 6/10.

If you read beyond the lines, like subtle mystery build up, love quirky cast of characters and picking up their traits, have attention to small details, enjoy good anime OST - you'd like this franchise.

Though at the end of it all, you might just become one of those loud Kurumi stans. Either way, it's a win.

I mean, Kurumi is carrying this anime, let's be honest. Half of the cast is plain annoying or stupid.

Really not for me. I like her though.

She has been given a narrative role which makes her really important in the overall plot. Has some cool dynamics with shido and different personalities is entertaining. That's it. I don't find much appeal in anything else.

What I found...

Origami has better character development.

Westcott is the best character.

Shido has the best character growth and most hype moments.

Mio has the best character storyline.

Tohka with Tenka has a story that hits closest to the soul.

Nia and Natsumi have more heart-wrenching backgrounds.

Even Woodman is more interesting as a character.

If you love Kurumi, great, but not even pure anime-onlies will be composed of 100% agreeing with that take.

Also the cast has canonically smarter people than Kurumi.

Being annoying is just... too subjective and abstract.

In the anime, the music caries it for me.

The correct order is

Main Date a live Storyline

S1 ---> S1 OVA ---> S2 Blu-ray version ---> S2 Kurumi OVA (but it taken place after S1) ----> Movie ----> S3 ---> S4 ---> then S5

Total Episodes : 48 + movie

Note: Date a live Season 1 and 2 Dub is not recommend because it does not has director cut extend scene as Subbed version,
But you can watch dubbed version, because it has good voice casts.

Date A Live Fragment: Date A Bullet Spin off

S2 Kurumi OVA ---> S4 E08-12 ---> DAB movie 1 & Movie 2

Before Season 5, If you have already watched all past seasons.

S4 E09-12 ---> S5 E01-continue

Mio, tohka are the best developed characters in the series with.... kurumi. I can't say anything here, it spoils everything, but her story is truly a tragedy, she is truly tormented. It's all in psychology, the phases of mourning, regrets etc. She also has a big evolution between s1 and s5 like shido or tohka. Afterwards comes origami, but its arc remains below volumes 16 to 22. Origami to carry season 3.

Volume 20/21 with the story Kurumi Friend by Dal encore shows all the psychological problems of Kurumi character, moreover, in the opening of s5, she is apart from the group in the photo.... it's a great harbinger of what's to come, it's quite a symbol.

Anyway, everyone has their own character preferences... many like Kurumi because of her character and her design at first glance (which made him successful in season 1)

In people's heads, date a live=kurumi, she carried the series commercially speaking. But all that to say that we have to get out of our heads the fact that DaL = harem, ecchi trash. personally it's my top 3 anime, the best series in the use of mysticism and character development.

Very well, with your extreme lack of input and resourcefulness, Ig you are living in your Twitter phase.
